Tell It To Me...

If someone had told me several years ago that one my favorite bands to see live would be an old-time string band, I would have called them crazy. It's funny how one's music tastes can evolve, because I absolutely love Old Crow Medicine Show.

I first heard of Old Crow in 2005, when Nickel Creek covered one of their songs at a show. It wasn't until 2007 that I actually got to see OCMS live at The Englert in Iowa City-which remains one of my absolute favorite concert experiences. These guys definitely put it all out there for their fans.

To call their sound bluegrass or old-time string band wouldn't fully describe their sound. The exact label doesn't matter anyway--don't let the fact that you may not listen to this sort of music already deter you. Give them a listen--more than once, and see what you think. I'm certainly glad I did.

A great cover of a great song--I also recommend checking out Gillian Welch

This song is just beautiful-not the best video quality, but Emmylou Harris joins in..

One of my favorites from their most recent album Tennessee Pusher

  1. 2 thumbs up for OCMS! I saw them at Stubb's on 9/11/09 and they played a tribute to the rescue workers that brought tears to the eyes of all...they can be silly or sincere.

  2. I remember that concert at the Englert was the day of the Virginia Tech shootings. "We're All In This Together" was pretty emotional that day too..
